Itinerary

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
Approach & Camp
Meet your guide at the Glacier Public Service Center for introductions and a thorough gear check. We'll drive to the trailhead and begin hiking through forest and meadows toward the stunning Lake Ann basin. Our approach takes us into the heart of the North Cascades, with views of Shuksan's dramatic north face growing more impressive with each step. We'll establish high camp either just below or above the Fisher Chimneys depending on snow conditions and team preferences. The afternoon includes rope skills practice for rock climbing sections we'll encounter on summit day, along with reviewing efficient transitions between terrain types. After dinner, rest up while taking in the incredible alpine setting.
DAY 2
Summit Day
Today is a camp-to-camp summit push on one of the Cascades' most aesthetic routes. We'll climb steep snow or ice up Winnie's Slide and Hell's Highway, working our way toward the Upper Curtis and Sulphide Glaciers. After crossing the glaciers and navigating around crevasses, we reach the exposed summit pyramid where we'll climb 4th to low 5th class rock to gain the beautiful summit. The views from the top are absolutely spectacular—a 360-degree panorama of the North Cascades. We'll reverse our route back to camp, downclimbing and rappelling technical sections as needed. Summit days typically run 8-12 hours depending on conditions and pace.
DAY 3
Descent and Celebration
Wake with the sunrise and enjoy a relaxed breakfast while sharing stories from yesterday's summit adventure. After breaking camp, we'll hike back down through the Lake Ann basin and forest, savoring final views of Shuksan's impressive north face. The descent typically takes 3-4 hours back to the trailhead. We'll regroup at the Glacier Public Service Center by early afternoon, where many teams choose to grab a celebratory lunch together. If flying out the same day, book flights after 7pm to ensure plenty of time for the drive to the airport.

FAQ's

FAQ's

What makes the Fisher Chimneys route special?

The Fisher Chimneys is considered one of the most aesthetic alpine climbs in the Cascades. You'll experience incredible variety—starting in wildflower meadows at Lake Ann, climbing steep gullies through the 'Chimneys,' crossing two glaciers, and finishing with exposed scrambling on the summit pyramid. The route constantly changes character, keeping the climb engaging from start to finish.

What kind of rock climbing is involved?

The route includes low to mid-5th class scrambling and climbing, particularly in the Chimneys section and on the summit pyramid. Your guides will provide instruction and may set up belays or rope protection for steeper sections depending on conditions and team comfort. Previous rock climbing experience is helpful but not required—we'll teach techniques as needed.

How does Fisher Chimneys compare to the Easton and Coleman-Deming Mount Baker climbs in difficulty?

Fisher Chimneys is more technical than standard Mount Baker routes. It involves steeper terrain, more exposed climbing, and a combination of snow, glacier, and rock skills. Prior experience with snow travel and basic rock climbing is recommended to help you feel comfortable with the varied terrain, though our guides will provide coaching throughout.

What are the most challenging parts of this climb?

The steepness and sustained nature of the Chimneys section can be physically demanding, and the exposed rock scrambling on the summit pyramid requires focus and comfort with heights. Glacier travel across the Upper Curtis and Sulphide Glaciers involves navigating crevasses. The combination of long days and varied terrain makes this a step up from standard glacier climbs.

What boots are best for this climb?

Because of the mixed terrain, we reccomend half-shank mountaineering boots. These boots are lighter and more versatile than standard mountaineering boots. They'll climb both the snow and rock well enough to go lighter with just one pair of boots for the whole climb! Check our gear list for the current model we reccomend.

How much will my pack weigh?

We reccomend going light and fast on this route as you often climb up and down the chimneys with all of your camping gear. With the our reccomended gear and good weather your pack can be as light as 25-30 pounds. With colder weather and less ideal personal gear, packs can be as heavy as 40-50 pounds.
