FAQ's
FAQ's
What climbing experience do I need for a guided day at Exit 38?
Exit 38 works for all experience levels. Complete beginners are welcome—we'll teach you everything from tying in to belaying and movement basics. If you're an experienced gym climber looking to get outside, we'll help you transition to real rock. For seasoned outdoor climbers, we support you on what routes inspire you most! Let us know your experience level when booking so we can plan the perfect day, and pick the right sub-area, for your abilities and goals.
What makes Exit 38 special compared to other Washington climbing areas?
Exit 38 is one of the largest sport climbing venues in the state, spanning three distinct zones—Mt Washington, Deception Crags, and Far Side—with nearly 800 routes between them. That range means we can match the day's crag to your group's ability and goals rather than fitting everyone into one venue. Combined with proximity to Seattle (30–40 minutes) and a wide spread of aspects and approach styles, it's an incredibly flexible area for maximizing your climbing time.
How does weather affect climbing at Exit 38?
Exit 38 sits at a similar elevation to Little Si and climbs well across much of the year, though conditions vary by sub-area and aspect. We monitor conditions closely and will reschedule if the rock is too wet for safe climbing.
Can you accommodate different skill levels in a group?
Absolutely! With three sub-areas and nearly 800 routes spanning beginner to extremely hard, Exit 38 is ideal for mixed-ability groups. We can set up multiple topropes or lead routes at different difficulty levels, or move between sub-areas, so everyone climbs at their own pace. Just let us know your group composition when booking so we can plan accordingly and ensure everyone has a great day.
What should I wear and bring for a day at Exit 38?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows full range of motion and provides flexibility for steep, dynamic climbing. Layers are important since you'll warm up while climbing but cool down while belaying. Bring a daypack with water, snacks and lunch, sunscreen, and any personal climbing gear you own. Some approaches involve real elevation gain and uneven trail, so trail-ready shoes matter too. We provide all technical gear including ropes, quickdraws, and protection.
What's the approach like to the crags?
Approaches at Exit 38 vary by sub-area—Mt Washington is closest to the exit ramp, Deception Crags is a bit farther, and Far Side is the longest approach, with some routes requiring up to an hour of hiking. We choose the crag for the day based on your group and goals. A Discover Pass is required for parking at most trailheads, so let us know if you need help arranging one.
