Previous experience with crampons, self-arrest, and ice climbing experience is required. Guides will refine steep snow and ice climbing skills. Be prepared for a 20 foot section of vertical ice depending on the conditions and sustained snow and ice climbing for 10+ pitches.

At 10,335 ft, altitude effects can occur. A gradual approach and proper hydration help ensure a strong summit day. Normally, climbers will feel the altitude for the last 1000 feet to the summit or so but altitude sickness rarely occurs.

Itinerary

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
Arrive in Anchorage
We'll pick you up at the airport and drive up to Talkeetna.
DAY 2
Fly onto the glacier and set up basecamp.
We take the most scenic flight on the planet. Then set up our comfy basecamp 100 yards from the landing strip.
DAY 3
Training Day
We climb the first few pitches of the route and rappel to knock of the rust and prepare for summit day.
DAYS 4-7
Summit Window
We summit when weather allows and rappel back to camp.

Do I need prior ice climbing experience?

Yes. Previous experience climbing on ice is required to sign up for this trip. Reach out to our team with questions on experience level.

How heavy is my pack?

Plan for a 20 pound pack on summit day. We normally don't camp on the route so packs are light.

What crampons do I need?

Sharp crampons with vertical front points work best for this ice climbing route. Check our gear list for the current best model.

What if the weather turns?

Safety first. Guides may adjust route, timing, or turn around. A summit is never guaranteed; a great experience is.

Can I rent technical gear?

Yes—crampons, ice tools, harness, helmet are available. Request during booking.

What ice axes do I need?

You'll want two technical ice climbing tools for the Moose's Tooth. Reach out if curious about which model is best.
