Altitude

At 10,539 feet, Glacier Peak’s summit is high enough for some climbers to feel mild altitude effects such as shortness of breath or fatigue. Staying hydrated, moving at a steady pace, and spending a night at high camp helps your body adjust comfortably to the elevation.

Itinerary

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
Approach to Boulder Basin
Meet your Skyline guide at the Darrington ranger station for gear check and then head to the to the trail at the North Fork Sauk River Trailhead (2,100 ft) off Forest Road 49.. The first several miles follow the North Fork Sauk River through dense, cathedral old-growth forest — a quiet, sustained walk that lets the body warm into the load. The trail steepens considerably above Mackinaw Shelter, eventually breaking out of the trees and switchbacking up to the Pacific Crest Trail junction at roughly 6,000 ft. A short walk south along the PCT brings the team to White Pass (5,900 ft). From here, guides will lead the group northeast on a cross-country boot path beneath the flanks of White Mountain, navigating toward Glacier Peak Meadows and camp near the former White Chuck Glacier at approximately 6,700 ft. The evening is spent setting up camp, cooking dinner, and reviewing the plan for summit day.
DAY 2
Summit Day - Glacier Peak (10,539 ft)
Early alpine start from high camp. The route climbs north and northeast from the meadows, gaining the upper glacial terrain and ascending toward Glacier Gap. From the gap, the team proceeds up through the Gerdine Glacier environs, navigating crevasses and linking snow slopes toward Disappointment Peak Cleaver. Guides will pitch or short-rope as conditions dictate on steeper sections. The final push follows the upper snow and pumice to the true summit of Glacier Peak (10,541 ft), the most remote of Washington's Cascade volcanoes, with commanding views in all directions across the North Cascades. The team descends the ascent route back to high camp for a well-deserved meal and overnight rest.
DAY 3
Hike Out
After breakfast, break camp and retrace the route southwest through Glacier Peak Meadows, back over White Pass, and down the long valley trail through Mackinaw Shelter and the old-growth forest to the North Fork Sauk River Trailhead. Total mileage on the descent is approximately 14 miles. Upon reaching the trailhead, the guide will conduct a brief trip debrief with the client before departing.
