FAQ's

FAQ's

What climbing experience do I need for The Tooth?

The South Face route is perfect for climbers new to alpine rock. If you're comfortable in a climbing gym or have done some outdoor single-pitch climbing, you have the foundation needed. Our guides will teach rope management, multi-pitch systems, and movement techniques specific to alpine terrain. This is an excellent stepping stone toward bigger Cascade objectives.

How long is the approach and what's the climbing day like?

The approach gains about 2,500 feet through forest and talus. It's much shorter than most alpine climbs in the Cascades. The climb itself consists of four pitches taking 2-3 hours, followed by a walking descent down the north ridge. Expect a full day, which is quite special for a legitimate alpine summit. Early starts help avoid crowds.

What makes The Tooth a good introduction to alpine climbing?

The Tooth offers everything you need to learn alpine rock skills without the commitment of a longer approach or harder climbing. You'll experience multi-pitch rope systems, alpine rock movement, exposure management, and navigation—all fundamental skills for bigger mountains. The moderate grade means you can focus on systems and efficiency rather than technical difficulty. Plus, the dramatic summit and incredible views make it a quite memorable experience!

When is the best season to climb The Tooth?

Mid to late June through September offers the most reliable rock climbing conditions when the South Face is dry.

Can you accommodate groups or families with different skill levels?

The South Face is a wonderfully clean route with solid volcanic rock and excellent features throughout. You'll find positive holds, good cracks, and friction that inspire confidence—exactly what you want for your first alpine rock climb. The upper pitches deliver increasing exposure and that true alpine summit experience/

What should I bring for the day clothes-wise and gear-wise?

Dress in layers for changing conditions—start cool in the morning and warm up during the approach and climb. Base layers, a light insulating layer, and a wind/rain shell work well. Avoid cotton; synthetic or wool materials are best. Bring a small daypack with water (1-2 liters), snacks and lunch, sunscreen, sunglasses, and personal climbing gear. We provide all technical climbing gear. We'll discuss specifics when confirming your trip!
