Altitude

At 10,781 feet, Mount Baker’s summit is high enough for some climbers to feel mild altitude effects such as shortness of breath or fatigue. Staying hydrated, moving at a steady pace, and spending a night at high camp helps your body adjust comfortably to the elevation. We will not go above 8,000 feet on this course.

Itinerary

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
Approach & Camp
The group meets at the Glacier Visitor Center at 8AM. Our guides will meet you for introductions, some Leave No Trace tips, group gear distribution, and personal gear check. Then, we will drive for approximately one hour to the trailhead and begin our hike to the Hogsback camp near the edge of the Coleman Glacier (6,000 ft). Once we reach camp, we will establish our tents, teach basic overviews of ice climbing technique, belaying, and safety, eat dinner, and head to bed.
DAY 2
Full Ice Climbing Day
We will wake up early to take advantage of a full day of light. After breakfast we will descend to the toe of the Coleman glacier where we will find the ideal terrain of vertical ice to begin our practice. We will run through various drills that teach the fundamentals of efficient ice climbing, and then we will climb and refine our movement until evening.
DAY 3
Descent back to the trailhead
After a huge day of ice climbing we will pack up our camp, cover any remaining material, and begin our descent back to the trailhead. Depending on the timing and conditions we may stop by the lesson zone from the day before and get in a few more pitches of ice climbing before returning to our cars.

FAQ's

FAQ's

How heavy is my pack?

Plan for 30–40 lb including personal gear, shared group items, water, and food to camp.

What boots do I need?

Mountaineering boots (full shank) compatible with crampons (typically semi-automatic). We’ll send a gear list and rental options if needed.
