Climbers should be in excellent physical condition with strong cardiovascular endurance and climbing fitness. The approach to Goode gains significant elevation across 14+ miles with a heavy pack, followed by the summit day involving glacier travel and 6+ hours of continuous movement on the rock, and then 20+ miles of hiking back to the trailhead. Training should include uphill hikes with a weighted pack , climbing gym sessions, and cardiovascular training like trail running or stair climbing. The climb demands both sustained physical effort and the ability to move efficiently on exposed rock. Contact us for a free training consultation!

Itinerary

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
Approach to the Goode Glacier
Meet your guide at the North Cascades Visitor Center, check gear, and head to the Rainy Pass trailhead. The trail is well maintained and takes you deep into North Cascades National Park. After about 14 miles of hiking the trail comes to an abrupt end, and the epic Goode Mountain comes into view. Ford the North Fork of Bridge Creek, navigate some dense vegiation, climb next to stunning waterfalls, and make camp for the night at the base of the NE Buttress, just below the Goode Glacier.
DAY 2
Climb the Buttress
Alpine start before dawn to maximize our weather window and daylight hours. We'll cross the Goode Glacier, climb some steep snow, and navigate the bergschrund before accessing the buttress. We will spend a majority of the day on the buttress enjoying the meditative movement on rock and taking in the alpine views. Your guide will decide where to setup camp depending on pace and conditions. It is likely you will reach the summit today, but there are also bivy sites along the route that provide an epic place to rest.
DAY 3
Descent to the trail
Either begin to descend from the summit bivy, or push to the summit from a bivy along the route. Enjoy being the tallest people in North Cascades National Park, and start the long journey down. Multiple rapels and some bush whacking bring you back to a trail on the other side of Goode. Hike to a campsite for the night and get some well earned rest.
DAY 4
Hike back to the trailhead
Wake up and fuel up for the day ahead. Many miles of stunning trail await as you wind your way across rivers and through valleys back to the trailhead.

FAQ's

FAQ's

Who is this climb geared towards?

The NE Buttress of Goode Mountain is a large objective for more advanced alpinists. Some good climbs to have done prior would be Mt. Shuksan and/or the West Ride of Forbidden. This is not a beginner friendly objective, but we can help you develop the skills necessary to get there!

What climbing experience do I need for the Southeast Buttress?

This climb is best suited for climbers with outdoor rock experience; with a solid variety of multipitch climbs under your belt. You should be comfortable with 5.6 climbing, exposure, and moving efficiently in alpine terrain. Prior glacier travel experience is helpful but not required—we'll review techniques before the climb. Safe belaying skills are also required.

What's the camping like?

Our camps will be minimal and simple, small bivy setups in spectacular locations. A key to this climb is going light.

What if the weather turns?

Safety first. Guides may adjust route, timing, or turn around. A summit is never guaranteed; a great experience is.

What's included in the trip and what should I bring?

We provide all group camping gear (tents, stoves, cookware), climbing equipment (ropes, protection, technical gear), and dinners/breakfasts at camp. You're responsible for your personal gear, snacks and lunch for all three days, and any rental items you need (crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet—let us know when booking). You'll need a pack capable of carrying 40-50 lbs for the approach. We'll send a detailed gear list after booking, and we're always available to answer questions about what to bring.

How exposed is the climbing on the buttress?

The Northeast Buttress involves some full on roped alpine climbing in extremely vertical terrain. This route is for people who have experience with alpine rock climbing and feel comfortable in exposed and remote terrain.
