Index is widely considered the best granite crag in Washington — a narrow, forested valley an hour from Seattle where high-quality cracks and clean rock have made it a trad climbing destination for generations. This course is built for climbers who already lead comfortably outdoors and want to learn the specific discipline of trad: placing your own protection and building anchors when there's no fixed hardware to rely on. This isn't a beginning rock climbing course; it isa stepping stone into alpine or multi-pitch objectives — it's focused, hands-on time learning to place gear and build anchors you can trust. Over two days, your guide will work with you on the fundamentals of active and passive protection, anchor construction, and the basics of route planning for trad terrain, with the bulk of your time spent practicing placements on real rock and getting direct feedback on each one.

Overview

What your adventure involves

What your Adventure involves

The Discipline of Trad
Learn what it actually takes to protect yourself on rock with your own gear — a fundamentally different skill set from clipping bolts, and the foundation everything else in trad climbing is built on.
Read the Rock
Understand the difference between active and passive protection, and learn to spot what a good placement actually looks like — then practice it, over and over, until it's second nature.
Anchors Built to Trust
Build multi-piece trad anchors you can rely on, using the gear and terrain in front of you rather than a fixed set of bolts.
Think Like a Trad Climber
Get an introduction to the route-planning questions that matter once bolts aren't guaranteed — what gear to bring, what a bail option looks like, and how to research a route before you're on it.
Practice Where It Counts
Spend real time placing gear on Index's classic granite, with your guide evaluating every placement and coaching you toward genuine confidence in your own protection.

Itinerary

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
Trad Fundamentals at Index
Meet your guide at Index, the crown jewel of Washington granite and one of the best trad climbing venues in the country. The day starts with the fundamentals of trad protection — the difference between active gear like cams and passive gear like nuts, with a brief look at crack technique to support (though not replace) solid gear placement. From there, you'll spend the bulk of the day building trad anchors and practicing placements on real rock, with your guide evaluating each one and coaching you toward what a bomber placement actually looks and feels like. We'll also introduce the basics of route planning for trad terrain — gear selection, bail-out options, and how to research a route before you commit to it.
DAY 2
Applied Placement Practice
Continue building on Day 1's fundamentals with focused placement practice on additional Index terrain. You'll place gear and build anchors on routes suited to reinforcing what you've learned, with your guide giving direct feedback on each placement. The goal for these two days isn't to check a box or move you toward any specific objective — it's to leave with real, practiced confidence in your own gear placements and anchor-building, the core skills that trad climbing depends on.
