Crystal Mountain sits just northeast of Mt. Rainier and offers some of the best backcountry access in Washington — a mix of glades, ridgelines, and open bowls that make it a natural place to learn to tour. This course is built for intermediate-to-advanced resort skiers and riders who are comfortable on ungroomed terrain and want to make the transition into the backcountry. Over two days, your guide will walk you through the fundamentals: touring gear and how to use it, efficient uphill movement, downhill technique on variable snow, and an introduction to terrain awareness and companion rescue. This is a gear-and-movement foundation course, not an avalanche certification — climbers looking for a full, credentialed curriculum in avalanche hazard evaluation should plan to follow this course with an AIARE 1 course. What you'll leave with here is the practical skill set and baseline awareness to start exploring the backcountry with experienced partners.

Itinerary

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
Gear & Uphill Fundamentals
Meet your guide at Crystal Mountain for a full introduction to backcountry touring gear — skins, alpine touring bindings, and avalanche safety equipment, including a beacon check. We'll spend the morning on uphill travel: skinning technique, efficient pacing, and kick turns, before transitioning to downhill technique on ungroomed backcountry snow in the afternoon. We'll also cover trip planning basics and the group communication habits that matter once you're out of resort boundaries.
DAY 2
Terrain Awareness & Applied Touring
Build on Day 1 with a full tour that puts uphill and downhill skills to work on real terrain. Your guide will introduce basic terrain awareness — how to recognize low-angle terrain versus avalanche-prone slopes — along with an introduction to companion rescue and beacon search. This day is about applying what you learned, with your guide close by to coach transitions, technique, and decision-making in the field.

FAQ's

FAQ's

Do I need any backcountry experience before this course?

No prior touring experience is required. You should be an intermediate-to-advanced resort skier or rider, comfortable on ungroomed, variable snow — the course teaches the touring-specific gear and movement skills from scratch.

Is this an avalanche certification course, like AIARE 1?

No. This course covers gear, movement, and basic terrain awareness, including an introduction to companion rescue — but it is not a substitute for a full AIARE 1 avalanche course. We recommend AIARE 1 as a next step for climbers who want a complete, credentialed avalanche education.

What should I bring?

Your own backcountry ski or splitboard setup — touring skis or splitboard, skins, AT bindings, and boots — along with layers for variable winter weather. We'll send a full gear list once you're booked, and equipment rentals are available on request.

Do I need my own avalanche safety gear?

Yes — your guide can offer recommendations before the course.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We will perform the course to the best of our abilitiy. Guides will adjust as needed.

Is Gear Available to Rent?

Yes—crampons, ice axe and helmets are available. Request during booking.
