Fitness

Climbers should be in excellent physical condition with strong cardiovascular endurance and climbing fitness. The approach to the Thornton Basin gains significant elevation with a heavy pack, followed by summit day involving glacier travel and several hours of continuous movement on the rock. Training should include uphill hikes with a weighted pack , climbing gym sessions, and cardiovascular training like trail running or stair climbing. The climb demands both sustained physical effort and the ability to move efficiently on exposed rock. Contact us for a free training consultation!

After gaining the overlook above Thornton Lakes, we descend and navigate around the lakes talus to reach the col and stablish high camp in the Triumph Glacier cirque with incredible views of the surrounding peaks. Your guides will review the climb, organize gear, and discuss rope systems and route strategy. Rest up for the big climb ahead.
DAY 2

Arrive back at the trailhead in the afternoon, completing one of the most aesthetic alpine rock climbs in Washington.

FAQ's

FAQ's

What makes the NE Ridge such a classic climb?

The NE Ridge delivers everything that makes North Cascades climbing special: a wild approach, spectacular high camp, and pitch after pitch of engaging granite climbing on an exposed, aesthetic ridge. Unlike shorter routes where you're done in a few hours, Triumph gives you a full day of quality climbing in an incredible position. The rock is solid, the moves are fun, and the ridge just keeps going—it's the kind of climb where you're genuinely excited to keep moving upward. The summit views are the icing on the cake.

How does Mount Triumph compare to other North Cascades classics?

This climb is ideal for those who have had a few multipitch and mountaineering experiences prior. You should be comfortable climbing 5.6 for multiple pitches and have experience with glacier travel and exposure. The route's length (over a dozen pitches) means efficient movement is key, but the climbing itself is enjoyable and moderate throughout. If you've done a few North Cascades climbs and are ready for something longer and more continuous, Triumph is a fantastic progression.

What's the camping like?

High camp in the cirque is spectacular, with views of jagged peaks in every direction and running water nearby. The remoteness adds to the adventure and gives you that true wilderness experience. You'll want to be comfortable with backcountry travel but the setting is absolutely worth it.

How long is summit day?

Summit day typically runs 12-16 hours from camp and back, which includes the glacier approach, climbing over a dozen pitches up the ridge, enjoying the summit, and rappelling back down. We'll start early to give ourselves plenty of daylight and move at a steady, efficient pace.

What's included in the trip and what should I bring?

We provide all group camping gear (tents, stoves, cookware), climbing equipment (ropes, protection, technical gear), and dinners/breakfasts at camp. You're responsible for your personal gear, snacks and lunch for all three days, and any rental items you need (crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet—let us know when booking). You'll need a pack capable of carrying 40-50 lbs for the approach. We'll send a detailed gear list after booking, and we're always available to answer questions about what to bring.

What if the weather turns?

Safety first. Guides may adjust route, timing, or turn around. A summit is never guaranteed; a great experience is.
