FAQ's

FAQ's

What skiing and mountaineering experience do I need?

You should be a confident backcountry skier comfortable on varied terrain including steep slopes (35-40 degrees), breakable crust, and glacier skiing. Prior glacier travel experience is helpful but not required—our guides will teach all necessary mountaineering skills including crampon and ice axe use, rope team movement, and crevasse awareness. If you're a strong skier ready to learn mountaineering skills, you're in the right place!

How does the ski descent compare to the climb?

The ski descent follows the same Sulphide Glacier route you climbed, offering over 4,000 vertical feet of continuous skiing from the summit back to high camp. You'll experience broad, rolling glacier slopes transitioning into more defined pitches with varied snow conditions. It's an incredible way to experience the mountain—earning your turns through climbing and being rewarded with one of the Cascades' most aesthetic glacier descents.

How long is summit day with the ski descent?

Expect 8-12+ hours round-trip from camp. The climb follows the same timeline as the standard Sulphide route, but you'll spend additional time transitioning to skis at the summit and managing the descent. The ski down is typically faster than walking, but we'll take our time to enjoy the skiing and manage glacier hazards safely. It's a long day, but the descent makes every minute worth it!

When is the best time for skiing the Sulphide Glacier?

April through June offers the best snow conditions and weather windows for this route. Spring provides excellent corn snow, stable weather patterns, and longer days—ideal for ski mountaineering. Early season (April-May) typically has more snow coverage, while late season (June) offers warmer temperatures and softer snow. We'll work with you to pick the optimal timing based on conditions.

What gear do I need for the ski descent?

You'll need backcountry ski touring setup (skis, bindings, boots, skins, poles), plus standard mountaineering gear (crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet). Your skis should be capable of handling variable conditions and steep terrain. We provide ropes and technical climbing gear. You'll carry skis on your pack during the approach and climb, so a comfortable pack system is essential. We'll send a detailed gear list after booking and can discuss equipment questions during your consultation.

How heavy is my pack with ski gear?

Plan for 35-45 lbs including personal gear, shared group items, water, food, and your ski setup. During the summit climb, you'll carry your skis on your pack, adding extra weight and bulk. Proper pack organization and a comfortable carrying system are essential. Training with a weighted pack that includes skis will help prepare you for the approach and summit day.
